John Russell Nerad was born on February 23, 1926 to parents, Anton H. and Florence C. Nerad (née Meisch), in Marshall, Minnesota. A sister, Jean Marie, was born in May, 1928. The family moved to Alton Street in Wilmington, California sometime between late 1928 and early 1930, and later moved to Lakme Avenue.
John Nerad attended Gulf Avenue and Fries Avenue primary schools and Phineas Banning High School, graduating in 1943. Following high school, he attended the University of Minnesota, then enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945. After serving three years in the Navy, Nerad returned to college, attending Long Beach City College and Pomona College, and in 1954 graduated from the School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California.
He married Mary Therese Vickers in Santa Clara, California, on April 17, 1963 and the couple settled in the Northern California area, where Nerad had a thriving dental practice. Upon retirement in the early 1990s, he relocated to Southern California. Dr. John Russell Nerad passed away in Palm Springs, California in October 2020.
