Doralee was born on March 3, 1923 in Center Point, Linn County, Iowa, and adopted by Michael J. and Hazel I. Skerik (née Reed) before her first birthday. The family moved from Iowa to San Pedro, California in 1939. Doralee attended Richard Henry Dana Junior High School and San Pedro High School, graduating in 1942. In August 1943, she enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve and attended radio school at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. She was later stationed at Camp Elliott in San Diego, California, and discharged December 5, 1945.
Following World War II, Doralee worked as a stenographer at the Wilmington Community Center. In 1948, she was hired as a security officer for the United States Immigration Service at Terminal Island. Doralee married Raymond Uruburu in Long Beach, California on August 4, 1948, and the couple had a daughter in 1952. She was an active member of several community organizations, including the Harbor District Women’s American Legion Post 788, the Harbor Area Volunteer Bureau, and the Wilmington Junior Women’s Club. Doralee Uruburu passed away on October 20, 2015 in San Pedro, California and is buried at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
The Wilmington Junior Women’s Club was established in January 1938 as a philanthropic and social organization for young women ages eighteen to thirty. Founding officers were: Lucille Schultz, president; Aileen Foster, vice-president; Thelma Gordon, treasurer; Dorothy Davenport, recording secretary; Jean Zanello, corresponding secretary. The organization’s fundraising efforts focused on rummage sales and bazaars, dinner and luncheon events, card parties, teas and fashion shows, and flower shows to benefit community art events and youth activities. Doralee Uruburu was president of the Wilmington Junior Women’s Club for two years, 1956-1957.
