Wilmington Community and Civic Organizations Collection

Title

Wilmington Community and Civic Organizations Collection

Description

Location: Shelf 1, Row 4

The Wilmington Community and Civic Organizations Collection documents the activities of cultural heritage institutions, fraternal and women’s clubs, children and teen groups, ethnic centered organizations, political groups, groups promoting advocacy for seniors and other-abled residents, community and neighborhood associations, organizations focused on physical and mental health, education, recreation and leisure, support for veterans, homelessness, and environmental issues. The collection is arranged alphabetically at the collection level, and consists of a wide variety of printed materials, photographs, and three-dimensional objects, spanning from 1935 to 2013.

Highlights of the collection include the Banning Park Neighborhood Association papers which detail the organization’s recommendations for commercial and recreational development and zoning modifications, and describe community concerns such as littering, graffiti, panhandling, illegal parking, and loitering in commercial spaces, and includes issues of the Grass Roots Newsletter (1988-1990), and internal administrative records. Also worth noting are the papers of the Ad Hoc Committee for a New Wilmington, organized in 1990 to research Wilmington’s legal status as a city, its legal relationship to the City of Los Angeles, and the feasibility of detachment and incorporation. The collection also includes historic photographs of various organizations such as: the Salvation Army, Wilmington Boy Scouts, King Tut Cootiette Club, Wilmington Lion’s Club, the 30-Year Club, American Legion Unit No. 287, Becky Thatcher Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Wilmington Optimist Club, and the Wilmington YMCA, and other groups, dating from the 1930s through the 1950s.
